Creating a Climate for Writing
It is said that in a differentiated classroom, the climate is conducive to writing. This simple means that writers are comfortable, and excited to do such because the environment caters to their needs. The activities incorporated motivates and challenges students to become authors. In the differentiated classroom writers feel secure in taking risks with their ideas and skills during writing exercises. This makes students feel comfortable to share their pieces without being ridiculed. They use this forum to build their skills, correct their mistakes and better themselves.
Create an environment that motivates the writer
Instill self-efficacy - this is creating an "I can do it, I believe myself" attitude. Students believe in themselves and their ability to produce well written pieces. This is influenced by the chosen activities, motivation and ambition of the students' achievement. Students are able to become better writers with adequate and appropriate feedback to improve and minimize errors. Writers must be pushed to the level of "I can" rather than the self-doubt or " I can't". High confidence and self esteem are what motivates the writers.
Develop Self - Regulated Learners
These learners monitor and control their thought process in order to learn. Writers use a model to plan self-regulate learning experiences by monitoring and evaluating self, setting goals and strategic planning, putting a plan into action and monitoring it, and monitoring outcomes and refining strategies. Students should be able to think about their thinking and monitor their thoughts. In addition, teachers are expected to guide students throughout the thought process that accompanies writing before, during and after each activity.
Develop Internal Motivation
Learners must be instrinsically motivated thus resulting in them wanting to participate in writing activities. Students become more motivated in tasks and activities when teachers provide timely feedback and present opportunities for self selection of topics and other instructional procedures. Teachers must also display that willingness and exciting attitude which students adapt to be apart of their own "I can do it" attitude.
Create a safe and positive writing environment
In such an environment the writers' work is acceptable and knows their pieces are special and valued by all both teacher and students. This environment caters to students' needs which motivates, challenges and stimulate students' desire to write. Teachers should avoid actions that hinder students from engaging in writing activities such as correcting with a red ink pen. However, teachers should create a positive environment through the use of charts, quotes, pictures and local sayings which encourage students to write and talk as growing authors.
Creating an exciting writing environment
Present students with activities that brings joy, happiness and excitement to the classroom. Teachers will be surprised as to the pieces produced by students after such activities. Additionally, teachers incorporate materials or resource that students gravitate toward and enjoy manipulating to aid drafting exceptional pieces. Such materials or resources may include but not limited to brushes, chalk, crayons, markers and paint. In addition, the magic materials include construction paper, cards, wallpaper and fabric. The use of newspapers and magazines helps students in the brainstorming process and provide insightful ideas and useful information which can be used as supporting details in their pieces.
Find the right spot for the write spot
If students are comfortable writing on the floor or outside the classroom then allow students to do so. These spaces helps students' ideas and thoughts to flow naturally. Students should not be forced to stay behind a desk or computer and write their pieces. Have students write in the comfort zones.
Establish Author Ownership
Be aware of feelings and emotions
Teachers must consider students attitude towards writing as this can only hinder or encourage the way they write and the outcomes produced. Provide activities which will encourage and motivate students to write more and become more interested in writing.
Provide choices
Give students the opportunity to choose their own topics as this allows them to feel free and write about what they know and or interested in. Allow students to set their own goals but provide assistance and guidance in achieving such.
Assess the writing climate
The teacher is responsible for setting the tone and controlling the climate that influences students' feelings and emotions during the writing process. In a differentiated classroom, teachers encourage students to use their talents, interests, skills, knowledge, experiences and personality in their writing. This brings out the joy in students as they write from the heart. These pieces tend to get these readers emotional and provides a sense of knowing the writer. In addition, positive climate motivates students to become writers for a long time.
