Two videos was shown by the lecture in relation to the stages of writing and the incorporation of spelling in language. We learn the importance of spelling. Spelling is important and is a critical component to communication, spelling and reading skills are closely related and help develop overall literacy. I knew it was important for students to know how to spell, however, these video's shows how much it can help children during communication and how it make connections between words and their phonetic characteristics.
Knowing how to approach spelling, other than sending them home with a list of spelling words to memorise, I will now think of different activities than can be done that will be appropriate for the different stages and abilities in the classroom.
I found this piece quite relatable. We must indeed be mindful of how we "teach" children how to spell. As I go out into the field I shall ensure my students are able to spell for connections and not for memory.
ReplyDeleteI found this piece to be quite informative. Spelling is indeed important and is needed for day to day communication. Students go through the different stages of spelling development and as a teacher we need to be aware of these stages so we can effectively plan for instruction.
